We believe in Jesus Christ, and we also believe he is the most significant person in all of history. Why?
For the last 2000 years there have been many different ideas about Jesus, who he is and his place in history. People have referred to him as a great teacher, an important religious leader, a prophet, while others even claim he never existed.
But we believe that Jesus is the eternal Son of God, the Second Person of the Godhead, who became a man (that is, He is truly both God and man). He was born into this world just over 2000 years ago to deal with the world’s greatest problem – sin, which is the cause of the broken relationship that exists between God and man. Jesus came to make it possible for people to have a restored relationship with God.
Jesus Christ lived a perfect life of obedience to God. He died on a cross to pay the penalty for sin, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven and will come back to earth one day to judge the world. On that great day he will take to himself those who have believed in him as the only way to be made right with God.
As people who believe in Jesus Christ, Koroit/Port Fairy Presbyterian Church are congregations of the Presbyterian Church of Australia (PCA) within the State of Victoria. We are a protestant Christian denomination. We are evangelical in practice, Reformed in theology, Presbyterian in governance and mission minded. We hold certain essentials of the Christian faith in common with all true believers in Jesus Christ. These essentials are expressed in the Apostles’ Creed, but as a member of the PCA, the full statement of our faith is contained in the Westminster Confession of Faith. For the purposes of unity and clarity, The Confession is a good summary of what the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament teach.
Here it is helpful to notice a key distinction between the responsibilities of individual Christians and those of the church as an institution. The church’s mandate is limited in scope: Christ has established it as a spiritual body with a spiritual mission accomplished by spiritual means—declaring the Word so that people can come to faith in Christ and grow in him together. The church as an institution has no business (and no expertise), getting involved in politics and other purely earthly concerns.
However, individual Christians who have embraced God's Word by faith are then called to go out into the world and seek to honour their Saviour in every corner of human experience, in every realm of human endeavour, in every aspect of what it means to be human in the world. It’s precisely that well-rounded Christian living on the part of Jesus’ disciples that bears witness to him, along with the words that we speak about his person and work.
